Alabama and Styx River RV Resort

We have moved our home to Alabama, and our staying at the Styx River RV Resort. This is an ROD (Resorts of Distinction) Park located halfway between Mobile, Alabama and Pensacola, Florida. It is just off I-10 but feels as if it is in virtual wilderness surrounded by lots of moss filled trees at each site. Since it is only a short walk to Styx River, this has allowed Frank to spend several days fishing and much to his surprise, he has been successful at catching actual fish—now that makes him a happy camper.

The park contains 198 pull through full-hook up sites, a restaurant, indoor & outdoor pools, hot tub, huge clubhouse, activities galore, riverfront nature trails, fishing, river tubing, game room and athletic courts. They do aim to please. We celebrated Valentine’s Day here, with a special dinner and dance that included live entertainment provided by the resort. We do enjoy our ROD membership because the cost per night is $0, and although we do have annual dues—just over $100 a year, it doesn’t take long to make that work, considering we stayed just a little over 65 nights last year at no additional site charge.
Since we were not far from the Gulf Coast of Alabama, we decided to take a drive down and check out the beaches. We have to say the Gulf Coast of Alabama is just as intoxicating as the Florida coast. There are miles of sparkling turquoise Gulf waters and stunningly white sands that are so soft it squeaks under your feet--which feels really weird, but good:) We found a state park on the gulf that has over 400 sites that we may like to stay at next time we are down here.

Probably many of you know we are always looking for regional specialties when it comes to food. We watch the Food Channel, we carry the book “Roadfood” and we are always open to suggestions from fellow travelers. Our goal being to enjoy great regional meals along our travels, and to try non-franchised establishments. Usually, they are informal and inexpensive; and often the restaurants are colorful places enjoyed by locals for their character as well as their menu. We haven’t been disappointed yet.
Our latest stop was on our way back fro the gulf. We visited the Burris Farm Market in Loxley, AL, as suggested by “Roadfood”. This is a fabulous farm stand and bakery, contained in a spacious, open-sided building lined with hampers of Alabama-grown goodies that range from asparagus and green beans to mouth watering strawberries. The Burris Farm Market sells not only fresh fruit and ready-to-eat desserts, but also a wide assortment of relishes, jellies, honeys, and pickles. We purchased several enticing items—yum is all we can say.
