On a drive today we visited the small town of Rayne considered the “Frog Capital of the World”. This the center of Louisiana’s frog industry, and ranks as one of the world’s largest shippers of frogs. Didn’t you always wonder where all those ‘frog legs’ came from—now you know. There are several colorful murals on the sides of old buildings-all depicting frogs in one fashion or another, as well as an old-fashioned five-and-dime where a nickel might not buy much today, but the merchandise in the store gave us the feeling of days long gone. Rayne’s other claim to fame is a very interesting above ground cemetery,
St. Joseph’s Cemetery, listed in Ripley’s Believe it or Not. It is said to be the only cemetery that was laid north to south rather than the traditional east to west.
Bucking Christian tradition, the graveyard began with the graves placed in a north-south position rather than the traditional east-west position (the east metaphorically representing the beginning of life with the rising of the sun and the west metaphorically representing the ending of life with the setting of the sun). Seems the gravedigger didn’t have a compass ;)
